My process for writing any type of content is heavily influenced by what I learned as a newspaper reporter in college. Feature writing was taught to us in a very formulaic way but our newspaper advisor was adamant about strong narratives. I developed a knack for “man-on-the-street” style reporting where I could take the story of a student or someone in the community and built an article around that weaving the more factual elements, supporting data, and expert interviews along the way. I won several state-wide competitions for feature writing and that’s what really compelled me to stick with journalism.
Throughout my career I have developed deep expertise in research, interviewing, and reporting. My work often involves weaving in my own experiences alongside expert advice, as I did when detailing how my family navigated child custody issues and a cancer journey. I reported extensively on pediatric, maternal, and mental health topics as a staff writer at Romper, and I'm particularly proud of my reporting during the early days of the Covid pandemic.
